Opening Address
What’s happening in the world of food?
Professor David Hughes, Emeritus Prof. Food Marketing, Imperial College
David reviewed where we are in the food service industry after close to two years of bashing: by income-constrained and value-conscious consumers; by aggressive QSR chains that have viewed the recessionary environment as an opportunity to build volume and share; and by mainline grocery retailers - with their 'eat out in' offers - desperate to maintain volume in the face of unprecedented grocery industry competition. He looked at the European food service scene and identified areas that will expand and those that will struggle. Going forward, the overall importance of eating out will continue to grow and businesses that will win, as ever, will be those who harness the established and emerging consumer trends. David looked at recent research identifying what consumers value and are willing to pay a bit more for when it comes to food and drink.
After Dinner Speech
The rise & fall and rise again of Gerald Ratner
Gerald Ratner was the millionaire chief executive of the British jewellery chain Ratners Jewellery, which he built into the world’s largest jewellery retailer business consisting of 2500 shops, making £125m, with a turnover £2billion. After some uncomplimentary remarks Gerald made at the Institute of Directors regarding product quality, the company suffered financial losses, and was renamed Signet Group in 1993.
